Written way back in the late 70's, this book might be tossed into the 'bodice ripper' category, but frankly, I didn't feel that way about it. Being a big fan of Laurie's I did keep many of her books, so I was relieved to discover that I did still have a copy. I didn't see the first book up for review, so I went into my vintage and collectable bookshelf to see, if by some minor miracle, I had a copy of this book. However, when I started on “Chance the Winds of Fortune”, I realized the book was the second in the series. I am thrilled to see some of these books are being released in digital format. ![]() When I noticed a couple of Laurie McBain's books were up for review on Netgalley, I didn't hesitate to request them. Who were the ghostly figures that kept both the storyline and the Bennet household going behind the scenes? That is the premise of Jo Baker’s engrossing novel Longbourn, which takes Jane Austen’s famous work, turns it upside down, and shakes out a fully realized and utterly convincing tale of life and romance among the servants.Īlthough Longbourn begins slightly before Pride and Prejudice and continues beyond Austen’s ending, for the most part it matches the action of that novel, focusing almost exclusively on the domestic staff. ![]() Longbourn: A Novel, by Jo Baker Review by Syrie James ![]() ![]() ![]() Also I am not in the mood for hot cops as part of the love triangle, tbh! And the love triangle Cosimano wrangles in there doesn’t land for me, in part because she cuts one leg of it out of the picture for half the book. A lot of the plot twists and developments are telegraphed pretty clearly, so there weren’t really many surprises. But Finlay is kind of a mess of cliches: her husband cheated on her, she’s a terrible cook, she only wears yoga pants, she’s clumsy, etc. Finlay doesn’t actually kill him, but when she winds up with his dead body in her van anyway, everything unspools from there. It’s a pretty straightforward mistaken identity comedic romantic suspense novel, in which a single mom writer of, yes, romantic suspense novels gets mistaken for a contract killer and gets hired to bump off a woman’s husband who, as it turns out, is a real nasty piece of work who also works for the Russian mob. ![]() Cue the audiobook of the first installment of Elle Cosimano’s new series, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It. ![]() I’d been reading a lot of heavy stuff lately, so I decided to break up that rhythm with something a little on the lighter side. ![]() ![]() She thought she heard something in the hallway.
